First Grade Parent Handbook
This handbook
is designed to answer some commonly asked questions about classroom policies
and procedures. We hope you find it helpful and will keep it as a resource
throughout the year.
Parent/Teacher
Communication: Our
goal is to keep you informed of what is going on in our classroom through
classroom blogs (see below), text messages, notes home, and an occasional phone
call or email. To express comments or concerns please feel free to contact us
at school through a note or school email. We will return all messages as
promptly as our school schedule allows.
Money: When sending
money to school with your child, please put the money in a sealed envelope with
your child’s name and the purpose of the money on the outside of the envelope.
End of
Day Routine Changes: Parents
picking up students early must check in at the office and the child will be
sent to you. Parents may not pick up the child from the classroom without
written approval from the office. If there are any changes in your normal
routine, please send a written note to the teacher. (Examples: riding a
different bus, getting off at a different stop, a doctor’s appointment, being
picked up by an aunt, uncle, etc.). Because our little ones can become easily
confused about how they are going home, we cannot take the word of the
student. Any changes must be in writing.
Tardies: Please note the district’s policy on
tardies. This policy is in the agenda handbook. Students should arrive at
school at 8:20. Class starts at 8:40. Any arrival after 8:40 is considered tardy.
School will dismiss at 3:30 on Tuesday through Friday. Mondays we dismiss at 3:00
Toys: Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home.
This causes a distraction in the classroom and often the toys get broken or
lost.
Illnesses & Medications: Children will
not be allowed to stay at school if they have a fever. Children must be free of
fever for 24 hours before returning to school. All medication must be taken to
the nurse. Only trained personnel can dispense medication to a student. All
medications must be in the original container and a signed permission slip must
be on file.
Book Orders: Book order forms will be sent home
approximately once a month. This is an inexpensive way to get good books for
your home. If you choose to order books, make checks payable to Scholastic Book
Club, not to the school or the teacher. You may also order online. There is never any obligation to buy books
from these clubs.
Recess:
If you want
your child to stay indoors during nice weather days due to illness or injury,
we will need a note from your doctor stating this. As the weather changes
please make sure your child brings a jacket or coat to go outside for recess.
We will go out every day unless it is raining and/or below 32 degrees.
Volunteering:
We love volunteers! Volunteers are appreciated very
much. If you would like to volunteer, call the school office for more
information. There is a training you must attend before being allowed to
volunteer for the classroom.
Lunch: If you would
like to eat lunch with your child please let the teacher know that morning so
that the cafeteria may be notified.
Birthdays:
You may send a
treat with your child to celebrate a birthday. Our school policy states that
birthday recognition will be very short with treats handed out at the end of
the day. Treats must be individually wrapped and/or store-bought. The policy
also states that birthday invitations for private parties will not be allowed
to be passed out during school hours. If a parent wishes to send invitations,
they must be distributed and put away prior to the start of the school day.
Teachers are not responsible for handing out invitations.
We hope
that this packet helps you with any questions you many have. Please feel free to contact us if you have
more questions.
